Brief Introduction of Bee Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS)
The Bee Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is the sole national research institute in apiculture. It was founded in 1958 with the support of chairman Zhu De and some other leaders and situated in Beijing Botanical Garden near the Fragrant Hill (Xiang Shan) in the west suburb of Beijing with beautiful scenery and abundant nectar plants.
With its efforts to enhancing the economic and social benefit of apiculture industry and promoting the modernization of apicultural science and technology in China, the institute places great emphasis on basic scientific questions on apiculture and applied apiculture and development of apicultural techniques. The research is organized into 7 themes: beekeeping techniques and apicultural equipments, bee genetics and breeding, conservation of apicultural resource, prevention and control of bee diseases, parasites and poisoning, bee pollination, bee products, quality inspection, supervision and testing of bee products. Now, research groups at the institute are organized into five laboratory: laboratory of apicultural genetics and breeding, laboratory of bee protection, laboratory of insect pollination, laboratory of bee products, laboratory of quality safety and inspection of bee products. The Bee Research Institute hosts one bureau key laboratory and one society: Center of Supervision, inspection and testing of Bee Products Quality (Beijing) of Agricultural Ministry of China, and Apicultural Science Association of China. Currently, IAR has 96 staff and about 15 master students.
The scientific capacity has progressed rapidly in past few years. The institute has made some important achievements in bee breeding, bee disease control, bumble bee biology and using, bee products research. In the past more than 47 years, 81 achievements have been obtained in scientific research. Among them, 58 achievements were awarded a prize, including 5 of national grade prize, 24 of ministerial grade prize and 26 of prize by the CAAS.
We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to visit our institute, and welcome you to collaborate with our scientists in research and development. Together, we hope to work to extend the development of apiculture, and make a useful contribution to the sustainable development of the world, ensuing that we live in a sweet world. With joint research efforts both national and international, We believe that we will make our institute a competent and internationally recognized research organization.
